Find Out What Effects A Sugar Addiction Has On Your Body

Before we have a look at what effects a sugar addiction has on your blood sugar levels let’s discuss the Ayurvedic point of view..

Sugar, being one of the six major tastes which form part of a balanced Ayurvedic diet, is not considered to be dangerous by the proponents of this way of eating. It is believed that the right type of sugar (raw organic) consumed at the right time, in small amounts and in harmony with the constitution of the person eating it, can be nourishing and beneficial.

Remember though that moderation is the key and, to keep control of your sugar addiction, you would have to study and understand the Ayurvedic way of eating.

Also don’t be taken in by the diet gurus who tell you that you can eat sweets to your hearts content as they are fat free! They are invariably 99% fat free but you have to take into account what all the sugar is doing to your body.

The problem is that sugar is “hidden” in so many products and your intake can soar without too much trouble. Look at the labels on biscuits, cakes, processed foods such as tomato and pasta sauces, canned fruits, ice cream and cereals and you will find that they all contain some form of sugar (sucrose, glucose, fructose, dextrose, lactose, maltose, corn syrup and sorbitol) adding empty kilojoules to your diet and not satisfying your appetite, hence the craving for more and more and before you know it you have a sugar addiction.

Add a few sweets, a soft drink or two and the refined, highly concentrated sugar, we add so generously to our tea and coffee, and you are set for disaster. By the way, if you are one of those people that think brown sugar is healthier, it is nothing more than refined white sugar with a little molasses added. Use only raw organic sugar in small amounts.

Blood sugar levels

All fruit and almost all vegetables contain carbohydrates which are broken down into sugar (glucose) during digestion. Glucose is a major source of fuel for the body and is taken from the blood stream and stored in the liver and muscles, ready for release when energy levels are low.

This process is controlled by insulin a hormone manufactured in the pancreas. This process is all part of your normal metabolism and, provided you restrict your carbohydrate intake to small regular meals, you should find that your energy levels remain stable.

Have you noticed how difficult it is to eat one piece of candy or one biscuit?

The problem is that, when you consume refined sugar as in candy, cakes etc. the sugar, in the form of sucrose, passes directly into the intestine where it is turned into glucose and is taken up by the blood stream increasing the glucose level. The blood sugar level is now upset and more insulin will be secreted to rectify this, which can set you off on a binge and could also cause mood swings.

Added to this, vitamin B is removed or destroyed during the refining process, and since the body needs vitamin B to use the sugar, it begins to draw on the bodies reserves of vitamin B to metabolize the sugar.

As vitamin B is the vitamin that helps you handle stress you will find that your mood and sleep pattern will be affected and fatigue and loss of concentration will follow.

Of course the easiest thing to do is to medicate these feelings with some more junk food, and this is where the unhappy cycle and, sugar addiction, begins!

About one out of five middle aged Britons have impaired glucose intolerance (their blood sugar levels are slow to return to normal after a carbohydrate meal) and cases of adult onset (type two) diabetes are on the rise.

Regular physical exercise helps to remove glucose from the blood stream to the muscles and boosts glucose intolerance assisting with the control of a sugar addiction.

If you feel the you are possibly suffering from type two diabetes you should consult your medical practitioner.
