Natural Depression Treatments

Natural depression treatments can be effective in treating mild depression but major depression is sometimes difficult to treat even with registered antidepressants.

Having said that, more people are on depression medications than ever before and, I feel, that it is often these medications that put them into a downward spiral.

Antidepressants work by normalizing the chemicals, or neurotransmitters, which are naturally present in the human brain. These chemicals, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, are responsible for regulating your mood.

Unfortunately antidepressants such as the SSRIs and SNRIs, can cause undesirable side effects such as:

•Headache

•Nervousness

•Nausea

•Insomnia

•Dry mouth

•Constipation

•Blurred vision

•Drowsiness

•Sexual problems

That is not to say that these medications don't work, it is the side effects that can sometimes cause havoc in your body. For this reason many people are trying out some of the natural depression treatments.

In recent years there has been quite an up surge in the popularity of natural or alternative medications but, despite their popularity, there is not a lot of evidence that backs up the effectiveness of these medications.

It seems that a complete make-over of your lifestyle is needed in order to deal with depression, and often when you are feeling down, these changes are difficult to implement.

Some of these natural depression treatments and lifestyle changes are:

Nutrition

Nutrition plays an important part in in the treatment of depression and this is covered in my article on diet and depression.

Nutritional Supplements

Antioxidant multi-vitamin/mineral supplements

Take in addition to a healthy diet to ensure you are meeting your nutritional needs.

B vitamins

The B vitamins, especially folic acid and vitamin B6, can be helpful in mild depression. B vitamins can also increase the efficacy of prescription anti-depressants.

Herbal Remedies

St. John's wort is a very popular herbal remedy used as a treatment for mild to moderate depression.

St. John's wort should not be taken with anti-retroviral medications, birth control pills, or antidepressants such as Prozac or Celexa.

Ginkgo biloba is thought to improve memory and other intellectual functions. The evidence is, however, not conclusive.

Remember that herbal remedies such as St. John's wort can take from three weeks to three months to show results.

Any herbal supplement should be treated exactly as you would any medication and taken only after you have consulted your doctor. Your doctor can help you weigh the risks and potential benefits.

That way, you can make an informed decision.

SAMe (S-adenosy-L-methionine)

SAMe is a methyl donor and is involved in the synthesis of various neurotransmitters in the brain and appears to be effective in the treatment of depression. Only a small number of clinical trials have been undertaken and have shown that doses of 200 to 1600 mg per day taken on an empty stomach are affective in alleviating depression.

SAMe is mostly well tolerated by patients and has the advantage of working more quickly than St John's wort. Use only the butanedisulfonate form in enteric-coated tablets, or in capsules.

Fish oil

Recent studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil may be helpful in maintaining a healthy mind. Try a good quality fish-oil supplement in a dose of about 1,000 to 2,000 mg per day and you could possibly find that your mild depression is dealt with.

This is because fish oil is an excellent source of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an essential fatty acid found in nerve and brain tissue.

Of course, treating the underlying causes of depression and not just the symptoms is always desirable and for this reason, natural depression treatments have been developed to help.

Some of these treatments are:

•Acupuncture

•Aromatherapy

•Biofeedback

•Chiropractic treatments

•Exercise

•Guided imagery

•Herbal remedies

•Hypnosis

•Massage therapy

•Meditation

•Relaxation

•Yoga
