There Are Many Dental Procedures For People With Very Few Pearly Whites
The best thing is to visit a Prosthodontist or an orthodontist to see which dental procedures they recommend to fill the gaps. Please remember that your teeth are not only used for chewing your food, but are a vital support system for your face. If you do not fill the gaps you will find that your face starts to sag and the wrinkles will appear very quickly. Added to that, when teeth are missing the remaining teeth move out of place and this can cause serious dental problems including loss of bone and further tooth loss. Depending on what teeth you have, your budget and the quality of bone remaining, your dentist could suggest bridges, implants, crowns, porcelain veneers or dentures. Mini implants are a good way of holding dentures in place. After all having a set of dentures in a glass beside your bed is not likely to make you feel young. Obviously there are other dental procedures that can be carried out such as root canal, which is done to remove the nerve from the tooth, and fillings. Here I would like to discuss the use of amalgam fillings as these can have an extremely negative effect on your health. Amalgam fillings have been used for many years but, because they contain mercury, many people believe that they should not be used. Mercury is one of the most toxic chemicals known to man and ingested in large amounts over time can have a very negative effect on your health. Whilst it has never been proven that the amounts found in amalgam fillings can affect your health, I have opted for one of the composite fillings now available. After all, why take the chance? Should you decide to have all your amalgam fillings replaced, please see that your dentist takes every precaution when carrying out the dental procedures to remove the old fillings. A crown is used to replace the outside casing of your tooth. After removing the decayed or damaged area of your tooth, the crown which is made of synthetic material is fixed permanently in place. A crown is often used in conjunction with a root canal as a tooth without a nerve will probably turn black and look unsightly. A bridge is a device that is used to replace one or more missing teeth by permanently affixing a porcelain tooth to two adjoining teeth. The dentist will usually crown the adjacent teeth in one bridge together with the missing tooth. These days dentists prefer to use implants as they are more permanent, but also much more expensive. Implants can be used to replace single, multiple teeth or all your teeth. How much you have done only depends on the depth of your pocket and the volume of bone present. Having said this, it is often possible to graft bone onto an area to make it suitable for an implant. An implant imitates the anatomy of the natural tooth root and jaw bone, so that it is very difficult for anyone to tell the difference between your implant and your natural teeth. With an implant there is no need to grind down the adjacent teeth to fit a bridge so that is a plus but do prepare yourself for quite a bit of bruising. If 3 or more teeth in a row are missing, you can have an implant borne bridge. This does away with grinding down of teeth or placing a bridge on a plate. As you have probably figured out I am very much against any sort of plate or false teeth. The problem is that they look like false teeth and collect a lot of debris, and will make you look a lot older than you are. With all the wonderful dental procedures that are available these days, it is far better to take the more permanent option.
If money is no object you can opt for porcelain veneers, but this is one of the extremely expensive dental procedures and is usually the domain of the stars!
