When It Comes To Looking Good, It Is Important To Have A Bright Smile

Whatever your age, it is important to have a bright smile to look young and healthy, so you need to see that you have a good oral routine.

The truth is that research has shown that most Americans, and I’m sure that same applies for other parts of the world, brush their teeth only once a day and only for about 17 seconds!

If you want really strong teeth and a bright smile you need to brush for at least 3 minutes, and then follow up with the rest of your routine. Do this at least twice, but if at all possible, three times a day.

A good tooth brush is the key to getting clean teeth and a bright smile. Most dentists recommend an electric tooth brush (you can also get very reasonably priced battery powered models) as they have revolutionized the way that you clean your teeth.

They are very gentle on your gums and it has been scientifically proven that they reduce plaque and gingivitis and leave your teeth feeling cleaner and smoother.

It is best not to use whitening tooth paste if you use an electric tooth brush as the combination is too abrasive and you may damage the surface enamel.

Once you have used an electric tooth brush you will never go back to a normal brush so, if you haven’t already done so, do pick one up the next time you go to the mall.

If you have a family you can all use the same brush but have your own head which is identified by a small coloured ring. Do replace the head as soon as it shows signs of wear.

Once you have got the best tooth brush you need to consider very carefully what you are going to put on that brush. Many dentists and health professionals recommend using a fluoridated tooth paste, and perhaps coating your teeth with fluoride, as this is supposed to harden the tooth enamel.

Most governments and local authorities also insist on putting fluoride into your drinking water! This means that even if it is good for your teeth as claimed, a fact which is now being disputed, you do not have any control over the amount that you are ingesting.

The chemicals most used to fluoridate drinking water are silicofluorides which are contaminated waste products of industry! No wonder fluoride toxicity can lead to an array of problems including a higher incidence of bone fractures and calcification, thyroid dysfunction, cancer and liver damage.

More and more scientists and researchers are now questioning the practice of adding fluoride to drinking water, but while they take their time it could be damaging your body.

To my mind the best way of protecting your teeth without any adverse reactions, is to practice excellent dental hygiene and use a water filter to remove the fluoride that has been added without consulting you.

There are many tooth powders and pastes available that do an extremely good job of giving you a fresh bright smile and that will not cause ill health. The one that I use contains bamboo powder and baking soda and I find it excellent.

Flossing is extremely important for a bright smile so use dental floss every day to clean between the teeth, taking care to remove plaque effectively. Make sure that the floss passes through all spaces, especially where the teeth make contact with the gums.

Pay special attention the back of the mouth and use more than one piece if necessary. Ask your dentist or oral hygienist to demonstrate the correct way to floss your teeth when you next visit them.

Flossing should be done at least once a day. Do not use wooden or hard tooth picks to clean between the teeth as these can damage your gums. A soft inter dental cleaner is available that will remove all food particles.

These are especially handy if you have bridges and or any other dental procedures. that make it difficult to get in there with the floss. The only draw back is that they can be a bit expensive, so I use them very sparingly.

A lot of organisms reside on the tongue and cleaning your tongue is a must for sweet smelling breath and a bright smile. A few quick scrapes with the correct tool will leave your mouth feeling great, and your breath sweet smelling.

I use a tool with a hard brush which is then turned over to use the scraper to remove the lose debris. Some normal tooth brushes have a tongue scraper on the back, but these are not as effective.

I have found that it helps to use a mouthwash after brushing flossing and tongue cleaning, as a lot of debris is left in your mouth and a good rinse can deal with this and avoid mouth diseases.

The problem is that, once again, you will find that the commercial brands are laced with all sorts of undesirable ingredients. Let’s look at some of these;

•Sweeteners such as Saccharine

•A significant amount of alcohol (around 20%) which actually causes bad breath

•A preservative such as sodium benzoate

•Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which is basically soap

•Sodium Chlorate

•Benzalkonium Chloride (can cause allergic reactions)

Tea, coffee and smoking can discolour your teeth, so cut down on these for a bright smile.

If you are following my mouth care regime you should not have a problem with bad breath, but just to make sure you are not offending your nearest and dearest do have a look at my recommendations.

Therabreath has been successfully treating bad breath for 15 years with more than a 95% success rate, so don't let your career advancement be hindered by a condition that is easily treated.
